Prickly Pears – aka Opuntia – aren’t actually pears at all, but an edible fruit from a cactus plant.
As imagined, this is an extremely well adapted plant for dry, arid locations & conditions.
Mild & sweet in flavor, just like the nature of a pear, prickly pears are juicy & bright red in color.
The fruit has many small seeds throughout the flesh that are small & hard. The seeds can be eaten, or spit out when eating the fruit by itself.
Perfect on their own as a snack, or use in beverages, cocktails, dessert & sauces.
There are a number of ways to treat them upon harvest to remove the thorns & make them easier to handle. However, always take care when handling prickly pears, as fine thorns can easily turn into slivers.
